Trying to workout at the gym AND avoid the flu?

It's January ... which means gyms are packed with new members. It's also the height of cold and flu season. Between sweat, sick members, and inconsiderate people who don’t clean off their machines, the gym can be a cesspool of germs. If you want to protect yourself, be extra careful when it comes to treadmills.

A new report by Today show correspondent Jeff Rossen revealed that the germiest machine in the gym is the treadmill. And it's not the handles ... it's the buttons.

The elliptical was the second grossest in terms of germs, followed by the mats and then free weights.

To keep yourself healthy at the gym experts advise:

  1. Always wipe down your equipment before and after using it.
  2. Always wash your hands before and after a workout.
  3. Bring your own mat for stretching and yoga. (Today)
