'Spider-Man' Is Leaving The MCU & Twitter Is Having A Fit About It

Spider-Man's time in the Marvel Cinematic Universe has been snapped short.

Unable to reach a financial agreement to carry on the Spider-Man franchise, it was announced Tuesday (August 20) that Sony and Disney had parted ways as co-producers to keep their collaboration going. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the studios failed to meet halfway on financial arrangements to keep up a unique partnership.

The agreement involved Sony, whose Tom Holland starrers Spider-Man: Homecoming and Spider-Man: Far From Home were produced by Marvel president Kevin Feige, allowing Marvel to feature the web-slinging crime fighter in Captain America: Civil War and Avengers: Infinity War and Endgame. Evidently, Sony and Marvel's talks of extending this deal for future Spider-Man flicks recently fell through — and Sony has since pointed the finger at Disney for the unexpected collapse.

“Much of today’s news about Spider-Man has mischaracterized recent discussions about Kevin Feige’s involvement in the franchise,” Sony wrote in a statement via Twitter. “We are disappointed, but respect Disney’s decision not to have him continue as a lead producer of our next live action Spider-Man film.”

"We hope this might change in the future, but understand that the many new responsibilities that Disney has given him – including all their newly added Marvel properties – do not allow time for him to work on IP they do not own," the statement continues. "Kevin is terrific and we are grateful for his help and guidance and appreciate the path he has helped put us on, which we will continue."

As expected, MCU and Spidey fans were devastated by the news. See all the depressing tweets below — including one from Deadpool's Ryan Reynolds.
