A new baby red panda was born at the Smithsonian Conservation Biology Institute in the wee hours of the morning on June 12, 2019. The first pictures of the newborn red panda cub were just revealed on Instagram and I am swooning!
The baby was born to 4-year-old Moonlight and 11-year-old Frank. Zoologists say they won't name this baby for a few months, mostly because they will not know it's gender until it matures a little more. An exam is necessary to determine the sex and they do not want to interrupt this important mother-cub bonding time. Right now Moonlight has been nursing her cub and both appear to be healthy.
Red pandas are endangered and the goal of the Smithsonian Conservation Biology Institute is to create a healthy population of them in human care.
